Rebel Jew

This track from the Silver Jews' 1994 album Starlite Walker shows the group's affection for country, and is complete with pedal steel, lyrics about Texas, and longing for a girl who is far away. This is the last album to include Steve Malkmus, who was a founding member of the band but dropped out to focus on Pavement. Songwriter Dave Berman wrote most of the songs while holed up in Oxford, MS- Faulkner territory. The whole album drips with sounds and images of the American South.

Berman lives in Nashville now. After a major bout with depression in the early 2000s, he attempted suicide- with a deadly combination of crack, whiskey, and xanax. He has since recovered, and become more devout in his Judaism. Earlier this year he announced retirement from the music business. Here is his paean to Jesus, "The Rebel Jew."
